Kids Workshop Series
10AM – 12PM Saturdays: February 1, 8, 15 and 22
Do you have a creative kid who’d like to learn new mixed media techniques and workshop their ideas in a studio environment?
The Lyceum’s Creative Discovery is a four-week course designed to introduce students to a variety of artistic disciplines and technique in different media. Students will have a chance to explore and expand their ideas under the guidance of Lyceum Collective art practitioners in a working studio and gallery environment.
This course is perfect for kids with a general interest in art who want to explore new techniques and experiment with different materials. It’s also ideal for middle-school-aged children who are planning to apply to arts-focused secondary schools who want to expand their portfolio or have it curated by art mentors.
Creative Discovery surveys mixed media, collage, basic hard-edge style painting and image transfer. The ultimate goal of the curriculum is to expand interests, build confidence, encourage studio practice and have fun!

Course Overview
WEEK 1 — Art Journals
We’ll get our hands dirty right away by learning a few basic techniques and using a wide array of materials to personalize our Art Journals, a hardcover sketch book to record course notes, ideas and visual inspiration. Our journals will become a resource for techniques, inspirations and art prompts for the future as well as a record of their work. After a brief introduction to studio set-up and tools overviews, students will get exposure to collage and mixed media using paints, vintage paper ephemera and stencil techniques. Students will also use the studio heat press to make a customized pencil case to carry their tools.
WEEK 2 — Basic Acrylic Painting techniques
This lesson incorporates both hard-edge and basic blending techniques to create shadow and depth within minimalist subject matter. Students will earn how to properly prep a painting surface and explore basic colour theory to then create and blend their own paint palettes.
WEEK 3 — Image Transfer
This workshop explores various transfer methods including tape transfers and acrylic gel transfer. Students will learn overlay methods, experiment with applying gel transfer to an alternative surface, and will make tape transfers from a variety of materials.
WEEK 4 — Mixed Media
We build on the previous two workshops by combining collage, image transfer and simple paint techniques to create a mixed media piece. Students will prep the gel transfers they made the previous week for application and apply it to a surface as part of a larger work of art. They will then make their selections to be included in a group show at The Lyceum Gallery in June, 2025.
